Plot

Phantom begins with a car chase in Chicago, which ends with a man plunging into the icy waters of a river. Daniyal Khan (Saif Ali Khan) is convicted for murder and jailed. A flashback of 6 months ago takes us to the office of the Indian R.A.W. chief Roy (Sabyasachi Chakrabarty), where he and his trusted men (Rajesh Tailang, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) plan a daring covert operation. Daniyal, now a dead-end ex-soldier with a completely deadened sense of life and death is pulled out of oblivion and pressed into service by the spy agency to wreak vengeance on the men who planned the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. He agrees on the reassurance that he will be reinstated in the Indian army to the same post from which he was removed, which means regaining the respect of his estranged father. His only team member, Nawaz Mistry(Katrina Kaif) helps him find his first target-Sajid Mir at the British England Cricket Match, and thus on determines his identity after breaking into his house and rigging up an explosion which makes the headlines. Coming back to the present, upon Daaniyal's arrest, he lands in the same jail as David Headley. Here he contacts Nawaz, in order to acquire 100 dollars so he can buy batteries, which hold a certain poison that kills you almost immediately upon hitting the tongue, which is also an un detectable form of murder, which will come out as a heart attack. After killing David Headley, the man who supposedly died upon falling in the icy river is found alive and Daniyal, who is using the alias of Jude Rosario in jail, is given bail and the police find it slightly suspicious, as if he entered jail with the intention of killing David and coming out. Then, he and Nawaz make a plan of going to Pakistan, where they will take down the last 2 perpetrators, Sahabuddin Umvi and Haaris Saeed. Here, they make plans of killing Haaris Saeed with an explosive planted in the mic during his speech. Though, when this plan fails, Daniyal pursues him in the car and shoots him in the head, causing an explosion. Now, with the Pakistani army and I.S.I pursuing them, they try and escape. Yet, there accomplices get shot. Now, they take a boat to escape through water, but Pakistani military find out and send patrol boats to apprehend all water vehicles and search them for Nawaz and Daniyal. They both hide in the water but Daniyal gets shot while shielding Nawaz from bullets and eventually succumbs to his injuries in Pakistani waters, leaving a heartbroken Nawaz to be rescued by Indian Navy, returning to the Taj and having 2 cups of tea, for herself and for Daniyal, fulfilling a promise made by him.

 Development
Kabir Khan and author S. Hussain Zaidi had come together to collaborate on Kabir's then untitled film, based on the scenario post-26/11 Mumbai attacks with Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif signed in leading roles.[6] The screenplay of the film is an adaptation and is co-written in conjunction with Hussain's then unreleased book.[7] The film earlier had a working title as Daniyal Khan, before being titled Phantom.[8][9] Saif Ali Khan and Kaif have reportedly learnt Kurdish and Arabic for their roles.[10][11] The plot of the Phantom weaves a fictional story to kill the perpetrators of 2008 Mumbai attacks- Sajid Mir, David Coleman Headley, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi (named as Sabahuddin Umvi) and Hafiz Saeed (named as Hariz Saeed). The film also depicts incidents similar to the Assassination of Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh and Boston Marathon bombing. Kashmiri Sufi singer Qazi Touqeer featured in the Afghan Jalebi song.

Critical reception

Meena Iyer of The Times of India gave Phantom 3.5 stars, calling it an oversimplified but patriotic thriller.[60] Bollywood Hungama gave the film 3.5 stars calling Khan's performance " focussed, clinical and precise, as the role demands" while stating that Kaif is "able support " while performing action scenes. It also praised the background score.[61] Rajeev Masand of IBN Live gave it 2 stars calling it slow paced, boring and a " wish fulfillment fantasy".[62] Shubha Shetty-Saha of Mid-day gave it 3 stars stating the "powerful story is diluted by the use of too many cinematic liberties and a rather lazy screenplay", "Flaws aside, it talks of a real concern facing all of us, even while taking a flight of fantasy".[63] Shweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times gave it 2.5 stars calling Khan and Kaif's performances "pedestrian" but calling the work of Sohaila Kapur, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Sabyasachi Chakraborty "power-packed".[64]

Great cinematography with concept and story in it . Nice directorial work by S. S. Rajamouli and the budget reflects in a heavy content of the film . I thoroughly enjoyed the paid preview . Its a first real tribute from film industry to the greatest epics of all time "The Mahabharata" .

Luring action sequence and VFX and one of the nicest delivered again from south .

Making bollywood look bad again in India , its absolutely not catching up with the southern films .

I am a north Indian and not a great fan of south but they really making bollywood run for its money spree .

First I then Kanchana 2 and now the mighty Bahubali .

Story - 9/10 Acting - 8/10 Visuals - 10/10

Really well directed and excellent movie. Different approach and most important is the gripping story line and narration. A "MUST WATCH" movie in theater. The cinematography is good and is a delight to watch and synchronizes well with the movie. And needless to say, one of plus points of the movie is Akshay Kumar's acting as an authentic security officer. Taapsee is a delight to watch. Rana Daggubati's acting is also very good and has done a very good job as another security officer. The storyline and the plot are new and refreshing which highly complements the movie. The songs are good and matches well with the movie without boring or torturing the audience. If you liked the songs in Neeraj Pandey's previous movie "Special 26", then you are sure to like this too, actually the songs are even more good in Baby. And, needless to tell about "Neeraj Pandey", the director who has given us epics like "A Wednesday" and "Special 26". He has just proved his mettle yet again.
